Watch a Thief fan film directed by one of the original game’s creators-

The intro cutscene from Thief: The Dark Project was a wonderful mood-setter, cutting between one of Garrett’s heists and creepy supernatural imagery, heavy on eyes to suggest he’s being watched. It’s also a neat “here’s how not to play the game” warning, with Garrett killing a guard, an act that summons three more and results in him having to beat feet. Now, thanks to the original game’s cutscene director Daniel Thron we’ve got another introduction to the world of the City: a fan film called Thief – Cutscene Zero.

It’s another of Garrett’s jobs gone messy, with Thron joking on Twitter, “I guarantee you he’s loading his last save right after this”. Cutscene Zero gets the fantasy-noir vibe down pat, from the unsuspecting guard seeing his reflection as he looks out the window i…

We’d all love a megabucks OLED panel but I’d happily have one of these cheap Prime Day gaming monitors on my desk from just $89-

The sky-high cost of the best OLED gaming monitors versus OLED TVs is something of a conundrum, what with 27-inch 1440p OLED monitors being priced up with 48-inch 4K OLED TVs. But here’s the thing. LCD monitors are still very good and can be had a startlingly low prices.

For proof, consider this quartet of extremely affordable gaming panels for Amazon Prime Day. Pricing kicks off at just $90 and even the most expensive option is $250. They’re all high refresh with at least 144 Hz and you get a choice of resolutions and form factors from plain old 1080p up through 34-inch ultrawide.

Arguably the best all-round deal of the bunch is the Acer Nitro XV271U. It’s a 27-inch 1440p model, which remains something of a size, resolution and pixel density sweetspot for gaming, with a 1ms…

Xbox boss Phil Spencer somehow managed to 100% Vampire Survivors while managing the biggest videogame acquisition in history-

Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer can’t be too concerned about how the Activision acquisition is going, because he’s dedicated over ten days of his life to getting every single achievement in Vampire Survivors, including the ones in its Legacy of the Moonspell DLC. Spencer ticked off the Victory Sword achievement—held by a mere 4.74% of Xbox players at time of writing—last Sunday evening, thereby ascending to the pantheon of S-Rank Vampire Survivors players and finally proving himself better than me at playing videogames. Which was probably his intention.

Assuming we can take old Phil at his word, this also means he holds the coveted EXTRA: Chaos Malachite achievement, currently held by a mere 1.87% of players and the rarest one going (so far as I can tell). I…

Witcher remake studio boss says it’ll remake what’s ‘bad, outdated, or unnecessarily convoluted’ without naming the sex baseball cards we all know he’s talking about-

The Witcher 1 is rough, gangly, utterly idiosyncratic, and fine as it is, if you ask me. Nevertheless, it’s due an open-world remake courtesy of the devs over at Fool’s Theory, and it sounds like they aren’t squeamish about updating some of the, ah, more awkward parts of CDPR’s original 2007 classic.

In a chat with Edge magazine (via GamesRadar), Fool’s Theory CEO Jakub Rokosz said that he’s always “wanted a chance to give [The Witcher 1] the justice it deserved,” and that means being clearsighted about the various ways Geralt’s original videogame adventure falls down.

“First and foremost, we need an honest, down-to-earth analysis of which parts are simply bad, outdated, or unnecessarily convoluted and need to be remade,” Rokosz told Edge, but noted the need to still highlig…

I seriously embarrassed myself today. About midway down today’s Wordle I found myself with a neat little group of three green letters—and no idea what to do with them. There was no word at all that used those letters in that order, as far as my brain was concerned. It didn’t exist. Wordle had gone wr-oh of course. The answer was so obvious I feel I should burn my keyboard in shame. Don’t tell anyone, OK?

Workers allege crunch and intimidation at Ubisoft’s Just Dance studio-

Things aren’t going well for Ubisoft’s developers. Barely a month after reports surfaced of staff pushed to breaking point at the company’s Beyond Good and Evil 2 studio, devs at Ubisoft Paris are now speaking out about an epidemic of “morally and physically exhausting” work at the studio, where they’re regularly pressured to crunch and projects are subject to sweeping overhauls months before launch.

Speaking anonymously to NME—mostly through the Solidaires Informatique union—devs at Ubisoft Paris tell stories of 13-hour shifts to get Just Dance 2023 out the door, with some individuals having to work even longer. “During daily meetings, some employees were explicitly encouraged to work overtime… The message was clear: ‘Work overtime’,” an anonymous dev told NME.…
